AF Area Mode
In auto mode, the camera focuses on the subject in the center of the frame. In P, S, A, and M modes, focus-area selection options are available.
Option Description
Auto Among five focus areas, the camera automatically selects the one containing the closest subject and focuses using standard AF.
Selected focus area is displayed in red when shutter-release button is pressed halfway.
Choose for snapshots or in other situations in which you wish camera to select focus area.

Manual

Among nine focus areas shown in the shooting display, the user can select a focus area containing a subject.
Can be used to focus on relatively motionless subjects not centered in the frame, or for focusing without using focus lock.
Camera focuses using standard AF.
AF area
Off

Camera focuses on subject in center focus area.
No focus area indicators appear in shooting display.
Use focus lock to focus on off-center subjects.
Pressing multi selector to right when Off is selected displays AF system sub-menu, where you can choose hybrid or standard AF.
With "AF System," a photographer can select options to focus on a certain subject using autofocus.
